The Senna Review Page - Read what others have to say!

"Even if Paul-Henri Cahier weren't an R&T Contributing Photographer, we'd still be singing the praises of his new book: Ayrton Senna - Through My Eye. It's a fantastic look through the lens at the Brazilian's incredible Formula 1 career, which began with the tiny Toleman team in 1984 and -- three World Championhips later -- concluded with the ugly crash in a Williams that took Ayrton's life at Imola, Italy, in 1994.

Reverence for Senna, though strongest in Latin America, is global, and this book is a fitting tribute to him. Cahier has chosen 105 of his finest photos of Senna, and the reader gets to see the driver with the trademark yellow helmet mature from an elated young newcomer holding Niki Lauda's hand aloft on the Brands Hatch podium in 1984 to a wiser and more pensive World Champ, still looking not quite right in his blue Williams suit at Aida, Japan, in 1994.

We're more familiar with Senna in the red and white McLarens, and Cahier delivers with many shots, including ones that show him dicing with nemesis Alain Prost. Some of Cahier's photos are documentary, such as that of Senna on the podium at Estoril, Portugal in 1985 (his first F1 victory); others are artistic, such as Senna's hands in his threadbare lucky gloves, which we published in our May 2004 issue.

The photos are large, and brief captions accompany thumbnail shots of all of the main photographs in a separate section. Following that is text by Cahier, which serves two purposes: It tells us his intriguing story as a photographer, and sheds more light on Senna, a complex man whom many consider the greatest driver ever."

"For 10 years, from 1984 to 1994, Ayrton Senna scorched the Formula One scene with his incredible driving prowess. Believed by some to be almost super-human behind the wheel, he lost his life in a freak accident at Imola, which quite ironically only served to heighten the almost-religious following by his legions of fans. Like other lost champions such as Clark, Rindt and Ascari before him, the life of Ayrton Senna will always hold a certain fascination for fans of Formula One history.

In "Ayrton Senna -- Through My Eye" photographer Paul-Henri Cahier, son of famous post-war photographer Bernard Cahier, pays tribute to the memory of Senna with a compilation of 105 of his best color photographs of the Brazilian champion. With a single, large-format photo per page, Cahier traces Senna's decade in Formula One from his first drive with Toleman in 1984, to his final fateful ride with Williams at Imola in 1994. The book is beautifully produced, and artistically designed, however, if there is one item to be nitpicked it is that I would have preferred to have had the captions located with the individual photos rather than compiled at the end of the book. Be that as it may, this book will certainly be a must-have collectible for any Senna fan." ( - Recommended )

"Paul-Henri Cahier approaches his job from the perspective of an artist, and when his muse was a man with an aura like Ayrton Senna it led to spectacular results. You won't see a better collection of photos dedicated to the Brazilian ace."

- Motorsport Magazine, 2005

"Paul-Henri Cahier is the son of the renowned motor racing journalist Bernard Cahier and a superb photographer in his own right. This very good looking book charts the F1 career of Ayrton Senna entirely in photographs, from his first races for Toleman in 1984 to that fateful day at Imola a decade later. The main photo pages are unincumbered with captions and text, with a thumbnail gallery and a few pages of story at the back explaining what it all is. "

"Any creative endeavor is a raid on the inarticulate" - T. S. Elliott

"Some things are truly beyond words. Despite the volumes of books attempting to describe the magic that made the late great Ayrton Senna da Silva the legend he was -- we have been left wanting . . . until now.

No other photographer today carries the mantle of resident artist in the rarified airs of the world that is Formula One better than Paul-Henri Cahier. As a second generation F1 photographer PHC began his brushes with greatness early on as a wee boy playing ping-pong with house guests like like the legendary Fangio and other grand prix luminaries who were part of his famous father Bernard Cahier's menagerie d' bon amis.

The photographic images of Paul-Henri Cahier are an inexhaustible invitation to discovery of things that are simply not possible to ascribe to the written word alone. With the prodigious gift that is Cahier's visual poem for our fallen hero we have returned to the place of joy and remembrance our hearts have longed for since the world changed forever on the black weekend of May 1994.

This book takes us beyond the mere surface of the image and into the realm of mystique. Like Senna before him, Cahier is transcendent in his art form where both talents on display are a tantalizing thing of beauty to behold. Any serious collection of motor sport is incomplete without this definitive aesthetic masterwork."

"Paul Henri Cahier's new book "Through My Eye" is a must have for all who admired Ayrton Senna and his amazing career in F-1. The pages are filled with probably the most expressive portraits of Ayrton Senna that have ever been taken. There are also photographs of some of the most important racing moments in Ayrton's career . Recognized as Formula One's premeir photo artist, Paul Henri does not let us down. The book construction is of the highest quality and will be right at home in any art collection."
